<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">During the time of Guru Srimanta
Sankaradeva the human society was divided on the basis of caste and creed. Mankind
was divided into four varnas (or castes):
Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras. Ancient Hindu texts suggest
caste system was not rigid. There are examples of men born to families
belonging to various castes and later with the help of devotion becoming
maharishis. This flexibility permitted lower cast Valmiki who was a Shudra by
birth becomes Maharishi and composed the Holy Ramayana. However, with the
passes of time, those in the privileged position, for their own selfish
motives, made the caste system rigid and then the caste of a person was
determined by his birth, not by his occupation. This means that a person’s
social status was obligated to which caste they were born into. Although this
or other forms of differentiation exist in all human societies, however, it
becomes a problem when such narrow minded caste system becomes the sole basis
of systematic ranking and unequal access to valued resources like wealth,
income, education, power and prestige. The Brahmans, usually priests, were at
the top. The next were the Kshatriyas, or political rulers and soldiers. The
Kshatriyas were followed by the Vaishyas, or merchants, and the fourth were the
Shudras, who were usually laborers, peasants, artisans, craftsman, and
servants. There were limits on interaction and behavior of people belonging to
one caste with people from another caste. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">The Priests (Brahmans) and warriors
(Kshatriyas) were said to be “better” than or “superior” to the other castes,
and in general the Brahmans and Kshatriyas were regarded as united into a
ruling class. But although the Brahmans and Kshatriyas together proclaimed to
be superior to the commoners, the Brahmans never hesitated to declare their own
caste as higher than the Kshatriyas. The Vaishya’s duty was to ensure the
community’s prosperity through agriculture, cattle rearing and trade. The
Vaishyas were considered inferior to the Brahmins and Kshatriyas and expected
to be weak in comparison to their rulers, and were infinitely exploitable and
regenerative. These oppressions however, were usually not boycotted because
this was presented as a natural state of affairs in the social real. Later, the
Shudras took over agriculture and cattle rearing while the Vaishyas became
traders and merchants. Then Shudras, who were usually laborers, peasants,
artisans, craftsman and servants, were thought to not have any special
abilities and were considered only capable of serving as slaves to the upper
three class. Shudras enjoyed no rights or privileges, and were not permitted to
perform any prayer, read or learn the Vedas or recite the mantras (prayer
rituals). They were also not allowed to enter temples and could only serve the
upper three castes as a slave, barber, blacksmith or cobbler (Gurjari). The
upper castes started to almost exploit the lower castes for their own profit.
Financially, the upper castes become richer and the lower castes become poorer
day by day.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">At that time, education and schooling
was also reserved only for the upper castes, especially the Brahmins. Moreover,
education and schooling was very costly. Thus, at any cost, the commoners could
not afford education. Paper was not yet discovered by mankind. People used to
write on leaves and on the bark of tree, in Assamese language we call it “hasi
pat”. Also the books written in “hasi pat” (bark of tree) were very few in numbers.
Books were not easily available even to the educated people. The schools were
run by Brahmins. However, in some of the schools like the school of the great Guru
Mahendra Kandali, which was located at Rampur (in Nagaon district of Assam,
India), the guru admit all the upper caste children. That means, the children
belonging to Brahman and Kayastha families. Still education was a dream for the
rest of the people. Even if the guru want to offer free education to all,
irrespective of their caste and creed, it was still not possible to educate all
because the cost of stationery were too high and needed to be incurred by the
student. As a result, a majority of the people were illiterate. Education and knowledge
(”Gyan”) became limited only to a few number of people. Through education we
acquire knowledge. In the life of a man, knowledge is like the Sun. Without knowledge a man becomes ignorant. It is knowledge
(“gyan”) that makes us a human. Humanity and morality is lost when people
lack knowledge. Even to know God one needs knowledge. So, with majority of the
people being illiterate, the knowledge and morality was lost. The people
belonging to the lower castes were fooled in the name of religion, in the name
of God. People were made to do many wrong things and perform many rituals which
were actually designed for the profit of those in a privileged position. The
path of righteousness was lost. Thus, the path of enlightenment and the path of
realizing the Gracious Almighty were lost. Unity among the people was lost. The
people become cruel and unjust. People lacked knowledge and become
superstitious. Ultimately, the people were in misery. At such a time, to save
the people from being fooled, to put an end to the sufferings of the people, to
tie mankind with the thread of unity, for the upliftment of the poor, for the
well being of mankind, to protect righteousness, to pave the path of
enlightenment, to reveal the true meaning of the Vedas, to insert the supremacy
of the Holy Bhagavata Purana and the sacred Srimad Bhagavata Gita, to show the
path of Loving Devotion (prema-bhakti), to spread the Holy name and virtue of
Lord Krishna, to establish the Bhagavata dharma, the Supreme Lord incarnated as
Srimanta Sankaradeva.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">The world is full of misery. Desire is
the root of all miseries. Desire leads to anger, hatred and jealousy, which are
all the enemies of one’s own self. Anger is a fire inside us and before this
fire could destroy someone else, it would first destroy us. Now, the main
question is could anybody give up desire? Answer is “No”. We are human beings
and we are always seeking pleasure. Today, (in this Kali age) human beings
don’t have any control over their senses. Everybody wants to satisfy their
senses at any cost. Human beings are greedy and are full of pride. But some
wise man had said that the pride of goodness is the root of evil. One’s pride
in intellect prevents absorption of the words of the sastras and saints into
the inner faculty. The sole objective of human life is to realize the Supreme
and Gracious Lord Krishna, and to make use of this precious human life for the upliftment of one’s own self. God could be realized only and only through
devotion. But where there is pride of class, devotion is difficult because
devotion is through the self, not through the body. And class and caste belongs
to the body and not to the self. So, in such a situation, to end the worldly
sufferings, to spread the supreme knowledge among all, the Guru Srimanta
Sankaradeva decided to impart the knowledge of the Holly Bhagavata Purana and Srimad
Bhagavata Gita. He decided to establish the Bhagavata dharma.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">In this Kali age, the sinners could
get purified only and only through Sravana and Kirttana of the Holy names and
virtues of the Supreme Lord Krishna (sravana means listening to the Holy names
and virtue of Lord Krishna and Kirttana means singing/reading the same). Hari’s
name is the greatest friend of man. Whoever utters the same, surely his seven
deeds are performed. Now, let us take note of these seven deeds:</span></div>
</div>
<ol style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">First,
Hari’s name burns up all the sins</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">It
creates virtue in great abundance,</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Symbol; text-align: justify; text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal;"> </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: -0.25in;">It
makes one detached from earthly matters,</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: -0.25in;">It
helps attain loving devotion at Krishna’s Lotus Feet,</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: -0.25in;">It
helps attain supreme Vaishnavite wisdom,</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: -0.25in;">It
leads to the burning of all illusions,</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; text-align: justify; text-indent: -0.25in;">Finally,
with supremely conscious and blissful Hari’s image, Hari’s name would unite the
devotee in the final stage.</span></li>
</ol>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">The person who sings Hari’s name
surely gets salvation, being free from other offences.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">The people in the Kali age would
indulge in sins. And since the people would be very sinful they have no right
over anything. Except Hari’s name, there is no other means that could rescue
the people and end their sufferings. Hari’s name is the sole rescue. In the
path of devotion (bhakti), one need not have to be a deva, dvija, a sage, one
need not have to be of a pure mind and heart, one need not have to perform any
sacrifice, penance or ritual, Hari is satisfied only and only in loving
devotion. Hari is the father of all, He is all merciful, God Supreme. Even the most
sinful and degenerate person gets redeemed from all the sins if he takes refuge
at Hari’s feet.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">In Satya, Treta, and Dwapara age, the
people had to make a lot of effort to get the meditation, sacrificial
ceremonies and worship done. And to perform these one requires a lot of virtue,
patience, hard work, purity of heart and mind, wealth and so on. However, even
if they get these rituals done, they rarely get the opportunity to become a
devotee of Supreme Lord Hari. Also, the result of all such performance was only
heavenly pleasure, wealth and prosperity, which were all perishable. Even if one attains the heaven, there too
their fear and misery doesn’t end. Thus, we could say that there was no end to
misery. There was no way to attain salvation; there was no way to attain the
Gracious Lord Krishna. Today, although Kali age is the epitome of all evil,
becoming a devotee of Krishna become very easy and simple, and Sravana and
Kirttana alone makes a person a devotee of Lord Almighty Krishna. Thus, by
chanting and listening to the Holy name of Hari one could realize one’s own
self and serving the illusory ties one gets identified with Hari. Chanting the
Holy name alone helps one cross the world.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">To impart the supreme knowledge and to
end the miseries of the sinful man, the Guru, Srimanta Sankaradeva faced a lot
of hardship. The difficulties faced by the Guru while working for the well being of mankind and the upliftment of the downtrodden and deprived sections of the society could not be expressed in words. To rescue the people
from their worldly sufferings and to pave the path of enlightenment, to pave
the path of salvation, and to establish the great Bhagavata Dharma, the Guru
needs to inspire loving devotion (bhakti) at the Lotus Feet of Sri Hari, and to
achieve this He need to impart the teachings of the Holy Bhagavata Purana and
Srimad Bhagavata Gita to the people. Now, one of the major challenges was the
illiteracy rate in the society. A majority of the people were illiterate.
Another problem was that the sastras were available only in the Sanskrit
language. Sanskrit was not a spoken language. It was used only by the Brahmins
and the literate people like the Kayasthas. For the rest of the people,
Sanskrit was a language of the Devas. So, the sastras must have to be
translated into a language understood by the common people. After translating
the sastras, the teachings must have to be narrated to the people. Moreover, the copies of the sastras were very few in number and were not easily available. Thus, it was
not an easy task to impart the divine knowledge to the messes when the people
were mostly illiterate, poor and busy in earning two meals a day. To impart the
supreme knowledge from the Holy Srimad Bhagavata Purana and Srimad Bhagavata
Gita equally to all the sections of the society the Guru translated the sastras
in Sanskrit into a language understood by the common people and authored many
sacred books, and wrote many songs and dramas. Since the people were mostly
illiterate, the Guru composed songs from the lessons of the Holy Bhagavata
Purana and Srimad Bhagavata Gita and sang the same in a melodious voice, so
that the people could listen to the songs, enjoy the songs and most
importantly, gain the knowledge from the songs. The Guru also wrote many dramas
like the “ankia-nat” and these dramas too contain the lessons of the Holy
Bhagavata Purana. Thus, the teachings from the holy sastras were presented in a
very artistic way to the people in an easily accessible, immediate, and
enjoyable manner. And the Guru, Srimanta Sankaradeva spread the Holy name and virtues
of Lord Almighty Krishna and the supreme knowledge of the Holy Srimad Bhagavata
Purana and Srimad Bhagavata Gita among the messes. The knowledge which was not
easily available even to the Devas and Maharishis in the Satya age was now
available to all. With the blessings of Guru Srimanta Sankara, that supreme
knowledge which Lord Sri Krishna imparted to Arjuna in the battle of
Kurukshetra, was made known to all. It was the knowledge supreme, knowing which
one could easily and very quickly get rid of all the worldly sufferings, attain
perpetual bliss, and get salvation. It fulfills all the desires. This knowledge
leads to the realization of Sri Hari. Knowing this knowledge one gets freedom
from the circle of birth and death and departs to Vaikuntha (the supreme abode of Lord Krishna). The Knowledge and the sastras, which were earlier confined only to the upper
castes and the learned people, were now available to all, even to the illiterate
people. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">The Guru Srimanta Sankaradeva imparted
the Supreme knowledge to all. He tied the society with the thread of
brotherhood and unity, and spread the message of love, devotion and compassion. He established equality among the people. He burnt like a lamp of knowledge and dispelled the darkness born of ignorance. He was an incarnation of Lord
Sri Krishna. However, instead of calling him God we call Him “The Guru” because
He came in the form of a guru, and only with the blessings of the guru one
could gain knowledge, and attain Sri Hari.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Dhekiakhowa Bornaamghor is a namghar (temple) in Jorhat district, Assam. It was established by saint-reformer Madhavdeva in 1461. It is located at Dhekiakhowa village of Jorhat, 15 km towards the east of Jorhat town, 3.5 km away from National Highway 37. It is called a Bornaamghar because of its historical association and large campus.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On 7th September 2013, we visited the naamghar for attending the Paal-naam. The sound of the prayer and the sacred musical instruments spread in all direction and a positive energy could be felt in the surroundings. The joy, happiness, excitement, loving devotion and the nectar of Hari-naam won the heart and attention of all the people. For a moment we forgot ourselves and got merged in that Gracious Almighty Hari. The presence of Almighty Hari could be felt at that moment. We have attended so many prayers at different places but there was something special in this prayer (paal naam). The peace, loving devotion and joy that we felt deep inside our heart is something that we could not express in words. Such a beautiful moment, nobody could express in words. </div>

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
Pandit
Sonaram Chutia started his career as a teacher. In his lifetime, Sonaram Chutia
served as a teacher in different schools. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
In
1939, he joined Sibsagar Government Higher Secondary School as a science
teacher. Later he joined Balama High school. It was at this time when Sonaram
Chutia joined Jatiya Mahasabha (Indian National Congress) and participated in the
Indian Freedom movement. He played an active role in the Quit India movement. For
this he was arrested by the British and was sent to Jorhat Central Jail in 1942.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
The late Pandit use to say that during that
time the Jorhat Central Jail was turning into an educational institution. It was
because during that time, the jail was full of patriots, freedom fighters and
well educated people. In the jail, Sonaram Chutia met many well noted people
like Gopinath Bordoloi, Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed, Padmadhar Chaliha, Debeswar
Sarma, Amiya Kumar Das, Vijai Chandra Bhagavati, Dr. Harekrishna Das, Pitambar
Dev Goswami and many more. The time that Sonaram Chetia spent in the jail had a
great impact in his life. In fact, one could say that his stay in the jail came
as a blessing from the Gracious Almighty. He was influenced and inspired to a
great extent by the great minds, especially Pitambar Dev Goswami, who draws the
mind of young Sonaram Chutia into spirituality and Vaisnavism. Pitambar Dev Goswami was the Satradhikar of
Garmur Satra. He gave Sonaram Chutia the holy scriptures that he had with him
in the jail and asked Mr. Chutia to read those books. He asked Mr. Chutia to
pay special attention to the Upanishadas. Thus, this was the beginning of the
spiritual life of the late Pandit.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
After
spending 2 years 18 days in the jail, Mr. Chutia was released on 22nd
December, 1944. However, he was put on house arrest for another 6 month. By
this time, Mr. Chutia started reading various books. He was highly influenced
by the Sankari culture and the Mahapurusia dharma, which is also known as Eka
Sarana Hari Naam dharma, or simply Vaisnavism. Among all the books the Holy
Srimad Bhagavata puran and the Holy Srimad Bhagavata Gita were his favourites.
With the support, encouragement and blessings of Pitambar Dev Goswami, in the
year of 1946, Mr. Chutia became a member of Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha,
devoting himself to working for the organization for the rest of his life.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
After
being released from the jail, Mr. Chutia joined R.G Agarwala Higher Secondary
school in Moran as a teacher. Later he served as the Rural Development officer
in Golaghat. In 1968, Mr. Chutia cracked
the SCS examination and joined the Jaisagar Panchayati Raj Administration centre
as the President and retired in the year of 1970. However, even after
retirement Mr. Chutia could not give up his love for teaching. Thus, once again
he joined Teok Rajabari Higher Secondary school as a teacher. And finally, in
30th May 1975, Mr. Chutia retired as the Headmaster of Teok Rajabari
Higher Secondary school.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
A Gadhian
in life, Sonaram Chutia was a class X student when he saw Mahatma Gandhi for
the first time, and met him personally later in Maharastra. Mr. Chutia waged a
lifelong struggle against the social evil like cast system. In his lifetime he
wrote many books. Some of these books are- Ishwaror Sarbopita, Naamdharma
Prakash, Mahapurush Sri Sri Haridebor Soritra, Mahapurushiya Dharma aru
Kormokanda, Ved aru Mahapurushiya Dharma etc. He made a great contribution to Assamse
literature. He remained the “Padadhikar” of Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha for 9
times and was the Chief-advisor of Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha during the last
moment of his life. Late Vaisnava Pandit Sonaram Chutia was honoured as the
freedom fighter by the Union Government of India in 1972 and the government of
Assam in 1973. He also received the Srimanta Sankaradeva-Madhabdeva Award in
1994, and in the year of 2000 he was awarded with the prestigious Srimanta
Sankaradeva award, instituted by the government of Assam to honour persons of
eminence in the field of journalism, art, culture and literature. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
Late
Vaishnava Pandit Sonaram Chutia was a guiding star for lakhs of people. In
fact, it is truly said by the the former president of Assam Sahitya Sabha and
renowned Assamese literature Nagan Saikia –<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
“Vaishnava
scholar Sonaram Chutia was like the guardian of the society in all aspects like
social, spiritual and moral. In the time when the degeneration of the social,
spiritual and moral values in the society was prevalent, late Sonaram Chutia
stood as the lighthouse to guide the multitudes. His demise left the Assamese
society without a guardian.”<br />

<br />
Sonaram Chutia- a person whose life was tougher than what we could ever imagine.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After successfully completing his schooling form Jorhat Government Higher Secondary school, young Sonaram Chutia went to Guwahati to do higher studies. He joined the Cotton collage. However, his studying in the Cotton collage and staying in the collage hostel was not a smooth run. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During that time, in India, the hold of caste system in the society was very strong. People blindly followed the caste system. The caste system was a system of division of labour and power in human society. In fact, even today, it is a system of social stratification although it is no longer powerful as it was in the past. Historically, it defined communities into thousands of endogamous hereditary groups called jatis. The jatis were grouped by the Brahminical texts under four well-known caste categories – Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and the Shudras. The caste system stamped an individual as upper caste, lower caste or untouchable from birth. The people who belong to upper caste, like the Brahmins, were considered as sacred, and those who belong to the lower caste were considered as impure and were hated by the upper caste people. Certain lower caste people were excluded altogether, ostracized by all other casts and treated as untouchables. The people belonging to the lower caste had limited mobility, or none; limited choice of occupation; restrictions on dietary and social interactions that defined who could consume what and accept from whom and so on. The people belonging to the lower caste had limitations on movement and access, including to religious and educational areas and to basic facilities such as supplies of water. The lower caste people were deprived of their rights by the upper caste people. Thus, the practice of the evil caste system isolated people, infused a sense of inferiority into lower caste individuals, and divided humanity. The caste system was not merely a social problem but it traumatized people, and prevented the people from developing. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sonaram Chutia also belong to a lower caste family, thus, his admission in the Cotton collage raised a wave of protest among the upper caste students. Many questions arise in the minds of the Brahmin students like – how can we study with a lower caste boy in our college, how can we stay in the same hostel, and many more. In the midst of such a negative situation, with the grace of the Almighty Hari, Sonaram Chutia got the admission in the college and also, this time, he was permitted to stay in the collage hostel. However, the problem did not end. During his stay in the college hostel, Sonaram Chutia faced a lot of trouble, humiliation and harassment from the upper caste boys. One day, in the dining hall of the hostel, one of the upper caste boy threw a left-over piece of fish in the plate of Sonaram Chutia and said “look! These lower caste people have survived only by eating the left-over food of the Brahmins. But see how this lower caste is coming to study with us….”. In this way, Sonaram Chutia was insulted and humiliated in every step and in every possible way by the upper caste boys. Later with the grace of the Almighty Hari and with the effort made by Prof. Divakar Goswami, superintendent of the New Hostel, the cold war of caste discrimination came to an end in the college hostel. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now the question comes- how much and for how long a young boy who have being facing hardship and discouragement could tolerate and hang on? Being discouraged and hurt in every step of life, many times, young Sonaram Chutia felt as if there is no hope. Since his childhood, Sonaram Chutia has been facing caste discrimination, humiliation and injustice. There was no such day when Sonaram Chutia lived peacefully. Generally, in such a situation a person loses hope and gives up. Once, Sonaram Chutia, being harassed by the evil practices of the society, had even decided to join Christianity leaving Hindusim. Sonaram Chutia was hurt deep inside, which nobody could express in words. He never had a playful and happy childhood like most of us had, he never had a colorful, exciting and enjoyable collage life like us. All that he got was harassment, hardship, and discouragement. And instead of enjoying the student life, Sonaram Chutia spent his student life fighting against caste discrimination, social injustice, and at the same time continuing with his studies. However, Sonaram Chutia never gave up. He never accepted defeat. No matter how much trouble he faced, he kept doing his duties (the duty of a student is to keep on learning). Sonaram Chutia ignored all the hardship and problems that he was facing and continued his study with strong determination and sincerity. He kept working hard. Finally, after giving a tough fight to all the obstacles and to the evils of society, Sonaram Chutia successfully completed his graduation in Science stream with distinction in the year of 1939.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After successfully completing his graduation, Sonaram Chutia decided to do MSc. But during that time there was no university in Assam. Thus, to do higher education one had to go to Calcutta, now in West Bengal. Sonaram Chutia packed up his luggage to go to Calcutta for higher education. Unfortunately, at the same time in September 1939, the World War II started. And due to the war there was an atmosphere of panic and unrest in India. And being afraid and worried, Mr. Jagiram Chutia, father of Sonaram Chutia stopped young Sonaram from going to Calcutta. And thus, the study life of Sonaram Chutia ended. </div>
<br />
<br />
Thus we can say that- <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
A winner is not the one who merely succeeds,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A true winner is the one who stands up after every defeat.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
No matter how hard the situation is, one must always continue doing his/her duty with determination and sincerity. Work hard but never desire for the fruit of your action. There is no need to do something big. Do something small, but do it by all your heart, then a small work done by us could be of great importance and value. When we feel that the light is gone, have faith, have patience and never give up because after the night is passed there comes a new beautiful morning. </div>

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Sonaram Chutia was an eminent
Vaishnavite scholar. He was an
educationalist, social reformer, and a freedom fighter. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Born in a very poor and lower
caste family, the late Vaishnava Pandit spent his entire life fighting against
the inhuman practices of the society. Struggling through the various obstacles
in life, Pandit Sonaram Chutia was not only able to establish his own identity
in the society but also he became a guiding star for the large number of downtrodden
people of the society.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Pandit Sonaram Chutia was born to
Jagiram and Phuleshwari Chutia on June 8th 1915, in Baam Kukurasowa
village, Kakojan, in Jorhat district. Although he was born in a poor family, he
was very good at his studies. Being a good and intelligent student, he was
supported by the teachers in his school. However, as he was from a poor and
lower caste family, he suffered from caste discrimination and injustice in every
step of life. As a school student, when Pandit Chutia appeared for the “Britti
examination”, which is a scholarship examination, his name did not appear in
the list of the passed students. Since young Chutia was a brilliant student,
his name not appearing on the list was very hard to accept to some of the
teachers, especially to a teacher named Kashinath Changkakoti. Mr. Changkakoti
investigated the matter and found that some selfish person had deducted 20
points from the total marks scored by young Chutia in the examination and
consequently his name did not appear in the pass list. Mr. Changkakoti then
informed the matter to the school authority and also threatened to do complain
if the matter was not solved. Finally, with the help and support of Mr.
Changkakoti, young Sonaram Chutia was declared passed. This was not the only
incident in the life of the late Vaishnava Pandit. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
In school, while doing his
studies, young Chutia’s faced a lot of pain and trouble that a child of his age
could ever bear. Sonaram Chutia studied at Jorhat Government Higher Secondary
school. Because Sonaram Chutia belonged to a lower caste family, young Chutia
was not allowed to stay in the hostel. Young Sonaram Chutia, was therefore forced
to live in a rented house. However, at that time, Sonaram Chutia was too young
to take care of himself. But, living in the rented house, he had to do everything
by himself. He was required to carry fire-wood for cooking from his distant
village to his rented house, do cooking and at the same time continue his
studies. Also the school was quite a long distance away from his rented house, thus, he needed
to walk a long distance from his rented house to reach his school. Now the
question comes – How much a little child could handle?? Sonaram Chutia was a little child and doing all
these works were far beyond the mental and physical ability of a child- Sonaram
Chutia. Consequently, being hurt, disappointed and unable to manage the
rigorous daily life activities, young Chutia decided to abandon his studies.
However, with the blessings of the Gracious Almighty Hari, a teacher named Jehiruddin
Ahmed from his school stopped young Sonaram Chutia from abandoning his studies
and provided him with accommodation in a school godown. With the help of Mr. Ahmed,
young Sonaram Chutia continued his studies and due to his hard-working nature
and strong determination, at the year of 1935, Sonaram Chutia passed the
Matriculation with letter marks in five subjects. That year, young Chutia was
the only student to score letter marks in the Matriculation. This splendid
result motivated young Chutia to continue his fight against injustice and caste
discrimination, and to continue his studies. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
"This knowledge is the King of all wisdom </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The King of all that is confidential. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is the purest and the topmost. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is the perfection of all religion .</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And everlastingly joyful to perform. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It gives direct perception of the self by realization " </div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
_Chapter 9, verse 2 (Srimad Bhagavat Gita) </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Srimad Bhagavat Gita- the Song of God, was spoken by the Supreme Lord Krishna on the battlefield of Kuruksetra in 3102 B.C, just prior to the commencement of the Great Mahabharata war between the Kauravas and the Pandavas. It was originally available in the Sanskrit language and was later translated into other languages. It is considered to be one of the oldest and the greatest spiritual book that the world have ever known. Here, the Supreme Almighty Krishna has precisely described the science of self-realization and the process through which a human being could establish their eternal relationship with the Gracious Almighty. It reveals the doctrine bhakti (devotion) and love of God. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Without the realization of our divine relationship with the God it is impossible to establish our eternal relationship with Him. The Srimad Bhagavat Gita describes three paths that leads to establishing a relationship with the Almighty. These three paths are- (i) yoga of perfect action, (ii) yoga of perfect devotion, and (iii) yoga of prefect knowledge. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Srimad Bhagavat Gita is consist of 18 chapters. Each chapter is called a yoga. Yoga is the science of individual consciousness attaining communication with the Ultimate Consciousness. Thus, we we could say that each chapter is a highly specialized yoga revealing the path of attaining the realization of the Ultimate Truth, that is the Almighty. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 18 chapters of the Srimad Bhagavat Gita could be classified in three sections. Each section gives a complete and detailed explanation of the three paths leading to establishing a relationship with God. The first six chapters could be classified as the Karma Yoga section, that is the yoga of perfect action. It mainly deals with the science of the individual consciousness attaining communication with the Ultimate Consciousness through our actions. The first six chapters are- </div>
Chapter 1. Visada Yoga (The Yoga of Dejection)<br />
Chapter 2. Sankhya Yoga (The Yoga of Analytic Knowledge)<br />
Chapter 3. Karma Yoga (The Yoga of Action)<br />
Chapter 4. Gyana Yoga (The Yoga of Knowledge)<br />
Chapter 5. Karma Vairagya Yoga (The Yoga of Work in Detachment)<br />
Chapter 6. Abhyasa Yoga (The Yoga of Meditation).<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The middle six chapters could be classified as the Bhakti Yoga session, that is the yoga of perfect devotion. This session deals with the science of the individual consciousness attaining communication with the Ultimate Consciousness through devotion. These six chapters are- </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chapter 7. Paramahamsa Vijnana Yoga (The Yoga of Wisdom)</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chapter 8. Aksara-Parabrahman Yoga (The Yoga of the Imperishable Spirit)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chapter 9. Raja-Vidya-Guhya Yoga ( The Yoga of Confidentiality)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chapter 10. Vibhuti-Vistara Yoga (The Yoga of His Opulence)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chapter 11. Visvarupa-Darshana Yoga (The Yoga of the Universal Form)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chapter 12. Bhakti Yoga (The Yoga of Devotion).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The final six chapters could be classified as the Gyana Yoga, that is the yoga of perfect knowledge. This section deals with the science of the individual consciousness attaining communication with the Ultimate Consciousness through intellect. These sis chapters are- </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chapter 13. Ksetra-Ksetrajna Vibhaga Yoga (The Yoga of Discrimination)</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chapter 14. Gunatraya-Vibhaga Yoga (The Yoga of the Three Modes of nature)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chapter 15. Purushottama Yoga (The Yoga of the Supreme Person)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chapter 16. Daivasura-Sampada-Vibhaga Yoga (The Yoga of discriminating the qualities of the enlightened and the unenlightened)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chapter 17. Sraddhatraya-Vibhaga Yoga (The Yoga of the Threefold Division of Faith)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chapter 18. Moksha Upadesha Yoga (The Yoga of liberation through Renunciation).</div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thus, the Srimad Bhagavat Gita is, in fact, <span style="text-align: justify;">the essence of the Mahabharata. It is not just a Holy book but it is a guide for the human beings to sail across the painful world ocean taking refugee in the Lotus Feet of the Gracious Lord Krishna.</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finally, it is to be noted that Lord Krishna spoke the Srimad Bhagavat Gita in 3102 B.C. This date corresponds to 1700 years before Moses, 2500 years before Buddha, 3000 years before Jesus, and 3800 years before Mohammad. Thus, it is clear that the Eternal Knowledge of the Srimad Bhagavat Gita has not been influenced by Buddhism, Christianity, Hebrewism, or Islam; for these religions did not exist at that time. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nobody is a Vaishnava by birth. In fact, we could never be a true Vaishnava. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Can we stop our lies?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Can we treat happiness and sorrow equally?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Can we consider a piece of gold and a stone to be the same????</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
No its not easy

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When we take refugee in the Lotus Feet of the Gracious Almighty Hari, he test us. And these tests are the most difficult one. Sometimes the Almighty will make us face the hell in life. He'll make us go through the hardest phase of life. Sometimes the light may seems to be fading away from our life. Sometimes we might lose hope too. But no matter what happens and no matter what it takes, we should never lose faith on the Gracious Almighty Hari. We must have to be strong; We must hang on, have faith....</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We should never doubt the Almighty. We must keep in mind that our Saviour- the Gracious Hari is there for us. And if we can do so we'll witness the Father Hari very very soon. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And the Lord Hari is very gracious, he'll keep on supporting, helping and protecting us throughout the test :)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So just have faith ♥</div>

<br />
<h1 align="center" style="text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
“O Hari, relieve me

O Hrisikesha, Thou art Ocean of Grace;<br />
Into Ocean of maya I am diving deep;<br />
O Madhava, lift me up.”</div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
Happiness and sorrows are a part of our life. At some moment in life everybody suffers from pain, agony or heartbreak. Many times we face difficulties. And some times hope seems to fade away. In fact, at every moment of life we have one or more problem or difficulty. Many times being tired of the sufferings a question arises in our mind- “when the sufferings would end and when we would be happy??”. Everybody wants to be happy in life. And to achieve happiness people do everything that they could do. Many people even use immoral means to achieve happiness. However, they fail to find happiness. All they get is a moment of pleasure and life-long sufferings. The main question is why do we suffer? And how could we end all our sufferings? For this, first we need to know the causes of sufferings and then eliminate those causes. Only then we could achieve happiness.<br />
<br />
The main cause of all our sufferings is our greediness, the negativity that is inside us. Out of this greediness a person’s desires increases all the time and due to this they are never satisfied with what they have. Even if that person is provided with all the wealth of the world, due to his greediness he could never be satisfied. Greediness forces a person to do wrong things. Greediness leads to hatred and jealousy. And slowly the person ends up loosing everything that he had. Greediness results in self-destruction. Thus, we should give up our greediness. If we don’t destroy greediness, it will destroy us. Suffering also comes from attachment. Thinking about sense objects brings an attachment towards them. Attachment breeds desire, and desire leads to frustration, which in turn leads to delusion. When you are deluded, you lose your memory and with the loss of memory, the power of discrimination is destroyed; with the destruction of discrimination your self itself is lost. Once a person gives up greediness and attachments, most of the sufferings would cease automatically.<br />
<br />
All that we need is love and compassion. Love and compassion are the solution to all our problems. With love we could also win the heart of a person who hated us before. We should have love and compassion in our heart for all creatures (not only for human). We should make others more dearer to us. If a person doesn’t have love and compassion for others, nobody will accept him. He may be a very rich person, but if he has no love and compassion in his heart for others, nobody will like him. He would be lonely; he would be depressed and he might even start drinking, smoking or taking drugs. That person could never be happy. So consider others as good as your own self. To see all creatures as good as oneself is the best of all means of one’s worship. We all have some good qualities and some bad qualities. We all have our own weakness and, at the same time, we also possess some strength. Respect people for their good qualities but love them for their weakness. Even more important than the warmth and affection we receive, is the warmth and affection we give. It is by giving warmth and affection, by having a genuine sense of concern for others, in other words through compassion, that we gain the conditions for genuine happiness. More important than being loved, therefore, is to love.<br />
<br />
Never engage yourself in caste discrimination. Having no caste discrimination between Brahmin and candela, treat everybody equally. Try to have the same attention to donors and thieves; try to have same regards for the pious and the mean. Many people also differentiate between religions. And it is not good. One should not differentiate between religions because all religions are same. Each religion teaches us the same things. Religions are different roads that lead to the same destination. People worship the same Gracious Almighty, but with different names. So respect every religion. It is the same Almighty who resides inside everybody’s heart. Our soul is nothing but a part of that Gracious Almighty. Lord Hari is prevailing through all creatures; regard them all with Visnu-consciousness. Knowing it well, love all and treat everybody equally with respect.<br />
<br />
Thus, the first step towards ending our sufferings is to remove all our negativities like selfishness, greediness, attachment, ego etc. and developing love and compassion in our heart for all creatures. To eliminate these negativity only prayer is not enough, one must have to practice patience, concentration, generosity, love and compassion by body, mind and soul. We must have to train our body and mind. Never be selfish because being selfish you will not be able to achieve much. True achievement could be made only with selflessness. Have consciousness and mindfulness. Always be cautious on what you say and what you do. Try to realize which of your actions are going to have negative effect on you as well as on others. If you find that any of your action is going to have negative effect on you or on others, don’t do it. Consider the welfare of others as well. All suffering comes from the wish for your own happiness. Therefore exchange your own happiness for the suffering of others. Be selfless and dedicate yourself to the welfare of all. Take refugee in the Lotus feet of Almighty Hari and chant hari hari as much as you can. Acting in this way all of the sufferings will cease. And we will attain a state of mind where peace prevails and then happiness will follow.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lord Almighty could not be achieved through sacrifice, penance, rituals and knowledge. The Gracious Lord could be won only through true devotion (bhakti). The great devotee Prahlada had thus said-</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
“For devotion one need not be God, dvija, sage;</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One need not acquire knowledge of many scriptures;</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Penances, silent prayers, sacrifices, gifts are mere deceptions,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Narayana remains content only with devotion.” _Prahlada Charitra</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, devotion does not come automatically. To develop devotion one must have to go on practicing it in body, mind and words. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<span style="text-align: justify;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
For practicing devotion at Lord Krishna’s lotus feet the company of Vishnu’s devotee is required first. Vishnu’s devotee should be taken as preceptor and well treated. Krishna’s feet should be meditated in hearts. The Almighty dwells in all creatures. Thus, knowing it well, have affection for all creatures. One should practice sravana and kirttana. The duties other then this are mere deceptions. When one thinks more and more about Lord Krishna, his devotion at Hari’s feet would increase and all the dirt of mind would disappear. Then alone to the Almighty Krishna our mind shall be drawn.</div>
</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now listen raptly, how to meditate on Hari; listen to the beauty and virtue of Hari.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There is a place named Vaikuntha. It is the Supreme Abode made only for Lord Narayana. The chariots glitter rows after rows, all inlaid with sapphires, diamond and emerald. There the Sun and the Moon shines in such a way that it is not known whether it is a night or a day. In the transparent water of the beauteous lakes bloom fragrant lotus and shining lilies. Flocks of swans are playing on the water, sportingly uprooting lotus-roots and eating there. On the bank, flower parijats blooms. The sweet fragrance of the flowers blows with the breeze filling the entire region with scent of flowers. The sparrows are singing in a melodious way and the black bees are singing Hari’s songs hearing which the Vaishnavas derive pleasure. At the centre of such highly charming Vaikuntha there is a tall Temple made up of precious gems. The pillars are made up of sapphire and walls of marble. It has pearl panels and diamond doors; thereon are carved out chains of gold, spotted with various gems and emeralds; and the beams are inlaid with charming rubies. The temple is dazzling as crores of suns. Varieties of canopies are hanging over there. Garlands of gems and pearls are hanging everywhere. Inside this divine temple on a throne of gems Lord Narayana is sitting charmingly. He is surrounded by his attendants, holding upon umbrellas inlaid with pearls. They fan Him both sides with white caamaras (a whisk made of the tail hair of the yak) and strew around Him sweet-smelling flowers. At His feet is sitting Lakshmi, Mother Goddess of Universe, offering her prayers in all devotional ways. In Eternal Form of Purity and Consciousness, Lord Hari continues to dwell there in Supreme Bliss. His Capacious Form is dazzling so amazingly that crores of kandarpa (the Indian Cupid) fails to conform. Father of Universe is devotee’s friend, Lord Hari keeps on shining as crores of Moons, whose very recalling burns series of sins.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The divine Form of Madhava is full of Supreme Bliss. It looks like a fresh green cloud. By the yellow robe upon it a glow is made. His capacious Form is so amazingly dazzling that crores of Moons fails to conform. The Lotus Feet of Hari appear as if in full bloom, by seeing which the devotees are highly pleased. The soles are purple in color. Ankusa, padma, dhvaja, vajra and yava are the signs. The fine fingers look like petals in form. They appear as spindles of gems. The nails glitter there as the half-moons. The ujjhanti (a kind of ornament) of gems are shining bright and sounding anklets are adorning the joints of Feet. The thighs appear as the trunk of elephant. A yellow robe glitters on the waist and a girdle inlaid with gems is tied over there. The Lotus-Navel of Lord Hari is shining brightly. On the pleasing chest are glittering locks of srivatsa (the white curl of hair on the chest of Almighty Visnu). There appears Maa Lakshmi shining as golden lines on black touch-stones. The green Body brightens with yellow robes as the lightning in clouds. Necklace of pearls hangs on the broad chest. Pecandaraornament (a kind of gold ornament) is glittering there. Various gems and pearls are glittering brightly. On the beauteous neck hang a beautiful garland of wild flower down to the Feet. The honeybees are getting intoxicated for honey-smelling flowers and they are humming in and round the garland there. The four beautiful arms of Hari are well built. They are blue in color and are highly attractive. Armlets, bangles, bracelets are shining there. The hands glitter like the new grown leaves. The fingers appear as sticks of gems. Various rings glitters there. The red Nails of the figures look like the moon. Lord is holding sankha, cakra, gada and paadma in His four Hands. Necklaces galapata and satasari are hanging in the neck. On the shoulder glitters the sacred uttari (a sacred thread) of nine threads. The conch-shaped throat is adorned by the gem kaustubha. The face of Lord Hari is as pleasing as the view of the full moon. It is as charming as the sun rising in early morn. On ear-lobes glitter the makara-kundala (fish-like earrings). With its radiations the yellow-white cheeks shine. Rows of teeth are so much attractive as if there shine a series of coral and gems. A sweet smile prevails over there in His lips ever. The nose is glittering like sesame flower, reddish Eyes look like petals of rose and Eye-brows resemble beautiful bows. On the forehead is glittering the tilaka (a small round mark on the forehead between the two eye-brow) of gem. Upon the head the Crown of gold is glittering, hair-bands are shining with cudamani diamond and amidst there is the golden Lotus Garland, by the glow of which the Face is being brightened. On such a Divine Form one should meditate. One should meditate on it again and again with firm concentration of mind starting from Head down to Feet inside one’s heart. Observing the signs of the Lotus Feet of the Almighty, namely dhvaja (banner), vajra (thunder-bolt), padma (lotus), ankusa (hook) and java (grain) one should bow down at Feet. Then there would be Suprme Success for you. Hari alone is Invaluable Treasure of the Universe. By meditating at the Divine Form of Hari one would overcome the worldly life at ease. Thus, don’t spoil the human life with fruitless deeds. In the Holy Kirttana Ghosa it is said:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
“Keep Lord Hari’s Feet in your firm grips;</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the only Boat to sail across Ocean of Sins.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Krishna’s kinkara Sankara says:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Ye all chant hari-hari in assemblage.”</div>

<br />
"Looking at Madhava, the Devas bowed down.<br />
They gazed at the Form attentively;<br />
Showered flowers on Him joyfully.<br />
<br />
With folded palms, in separate groups,<br />
They in devotion sang Krishna's deeds.<br />
Some were doing Krishna's kirttana,<br />
Some were dancing on to the tunes.<br />
Instrumental sounds prevailed over sky;<br />
Deva's beating of dundubhi rang high.<br />
'Glory be to Krishna' was pronounced joyously.<br />
<br />
Hearing sounds Hari looked above Him;<br />
He met Brahma in front of Him.<br />
Seeing other Devas too in front,<br />
Almighty Krishna shut both eyes.<br />
<br />
After performing yoga concentration all,<br />
Placing Himself in Supreme Soul,<br />
Leaving instantly the human nature,<br />
Into Vaikuntha didst Hari enter.<br />
<br />
As in clouds a lighting flash,<br />
Is too fast for anyone to trace,<br />
So also Krishna's speed of merger,<br />
Was too difficult for Devas to discover.<br />
<br />
The Body that was a meditating object,<br />
Its sight made even Himself amazed.<br />
Such a Body suddenly vanished,<br />
As does the lightening flash.<br />
<br />
Virtues like Beauty, Faith, Truth, Patience<br />
With Krishna did all depart hence.<br />
Seeing the happenings of the kinds,<br />
Devas were stupefied in minds.<br />
<br />
Wonderful was Krishna's yogic movement;<br />
Seeing it Devas admired and were all content.<br />
To King Parikshita Sage Suka said thus.<br />
O king, won't be amazed at it;<br />
Dead sons from Yama He brought,<br />
As gift to Guru didst He offer;<br />
As human to heaven He sent the hunter.<br />
<br />
When by brahma-astra you were burnt,<br />
He with Mace didst you protect.<br />
Deva Hari, being the origin of all creation,<br />
Didst not let survive the Yadu clan.<br />
<br />
There is no smooth sailing in man;<br />
Everything is disarrayed at the end.<br />
Lord Hari didst demonstrate it;<br />
Destroying the clan didst he depart.<br />
<br />
It is one of the sportive deeds of Krishna,<br />
One who chants about these always,<br />
Surely in Vaikuntha does dwell;<br />
Knowing it, give up idleness all.<br />
<br />
Do Hari kirttana always;<br />
Won't die by saying worthless words.<br />
Krishna's kinkara Sankara thus says:<br />
Ye all, chant hari-hari always."<br />

The various incarnations of Lord Vishnu reminds us of the evolution of life in earth, starting from matsya (fish) avatar to the much awaiting Kalki. In each incarnation the Master, the Almighty Narayana had taught us different lessons in a very sportive way. And the Holy Books like the Kirttana ghukha, Naam ghukha, Srimad Bhagavat Gita etc. contains these lessons that the Lord had taught us. In other words, these books contain the words spoken by the Gracious Lord. In the kali age these holy books are our only preceptors, our only guru. These books would always guide us on the correct way. It is given in the <i>Prahlada Charitra</i> (The Episode of Prahlada) that Lord Almighty could not be achieved through sacrifice, penance, rituals and knowledge. The Gracious Lord could be won only through true devotion (bhakti). The great devotee Prahlada had thus said-<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“For devotion one need not be God, dvija, sage;<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One need not acquire knowledge of many scriptures;<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Penances, silent prayers, sacrifices, gifts are mere deceptions,<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Narayana remains content only with devotion.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div align="right" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: right;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">_Prahlada Charitra<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">However, devotion does not come automatically. To develop devotion one must have to go on practicing it in body, mind and words.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For practicing devotion at Lord Krishna’s lotus feet the company of Vishnu’s devotee is required first. Vishnu’s devotee should be taken as preceptor and well treated. And in our times it is a painful truth that the society is developing for sure however, it is also degenerating as well at the same time. And we, the people, are so sinful that today it is very hard to find a Vaishnava i.e. a true devotee of Lord Vishnu who could guide us. However, if we search by heart we would find the company of Vishnu’s devotee for sure, and this company is in the form of the holy books like the Holy Kirttana ghukha, Naam ghukha, Srimad Bhagavat Gita etc. We should take these Holy Scriptures as our preceptor and treat them well. They are the only company of Vishnu’s devotee. </span></div>

The saint led the medieval Bhakti-movement in the north-eastern part of India and founded a religion named <em>Eka-sarana Hari naam dharma.</em> He is credited with providing a thread of unity to Assam straddling two major kingdoms (Ahom and Koch kingdoms), building on past literary activities to provide the bedrock of Assamese culture, and creating a religion that gave shape to a set of new values and social synthesis. The religion he started, Mahapuruxiya Dharma was part of the Bhakti movement then raging in India, and he inspired <em>bhakti</em> (devotion) in Assam just as Ramananda, Guru Nanak, Kabir, Basava and Chaitanva Mahaprabhu inspired it elsewhere.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div style="line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">His literary and artistic contributions are living traditions in Assam today. The religion he preached is practiced by a large population, and Sattras (monasteries) that he and his followers established continue to flourish and sustain his legacy.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div style="line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sankaradeva took his birth in 1449 in Siromani Bhuna family at Alipukhuri near Bardowa in the present district of Nagaon, Assam. He lost his parents at an early age. He was admitted to school at the age of twelve and after seven years came out as an “unerring scholar”.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div style="line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">On returning home Sankaradeva had to accept the Siromani Bhunaship. He got married at the age of twenty-one or so. But he was more inclined to the study of religious scriptures and ultimately propagated the Bhakti cult. At the age of thirty-two he went on a twelve years long pilgrimage with seventeen companions and visited most of the Vaishnava centres in India. Thereby he came into direct interaction with the nascent neo-Vaishnava movement. He saw the mission launched earlier in a proper perspective and also the means of realizing that.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div style="line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After completing the pilgrimage, Sankaradeva returned home in 1493. He renounced the post of Siromani Bhunaship and made all arrangements for the propagation of his faith. However, under the pressure of his kinsmen, he had to marry again a Kayastha girl, named Kalindi.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div style="line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sankaradeva had to leave his ancestral home in the Bhuna-territories in 1516 A.D. owing to the clash with the neighbouring Kachari tribes. With his kinsmen and followers he shifted the residence to different places on the northern bank of the river Brahmaputra and finally got settled in 1522 A.D at Dhuwahat-Belaguri of Majuli, the river island, in the Ahom kingdom. It was here that, in 1522 A.D, Sankaradeva initiated Madhavdeva into his faith. Madhavdeva had been an young and exuberant pandit of Sakta faith, but after initiation h become the greatest apostle of his guru.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div style="line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But soon the religion propagated by Sankaradeva proved to be a challenge to the existing Brahmanical priesthood. The priestly class naturally grew hostile to Sankaradeva, abusing and molesting his followers. They started lodging false allegations in the Ahom court against Sankaradeva resulting ultimately, under some pretext, in the tragic beheading of Sankaradeva’s son-in-law, Hari and the imprisonment of Madhavdeva for about a year.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div style="line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Being shocked and hurt by this inhuman incident, Sankaradeva made up his mind to leave the Ahom kingdom. In the meantime, he heard that the King Naranarayana of Koc-Behar was a scholar and a poet also. Hoping for King Naranarayana’s patronage, Sankaradeva with his followers sailed down the Brahmaputra in 1545 and landed at Barpeta in Kamarupa under the Koc king. Sankaradeva finally settled down at Patbousi in Barpeta for the last eighteen or twenty years of his life. Here he secured the patronage of Cilaraya, the brother and commander-in-chief of the king Naranarayana, as a daughter of Sankaradeva’s cousin Ramraya was given in marriage to Cilaraya. Then Sankaradeva found another rich and sagacious devotee, named Bhavananda Saud (renamed as Narayana Das Thakur). His religious order thrived much there.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div style="line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In about 1550, Sankaradeva set out for his second pilgrimage with 120 followers, including Madhavdeva and others. The pilgrimage took only six months and extended upto Puri only.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div style="line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In the Koc kingdom, Sankaradeva’s new cult grew to its fullness. The old priestly class alleged to king Naranarayana against the teachings of Sankaradeva. The king ordered Sankaradeva to appear in his court. Sankaradeva appeared in the court in 1558. The king was overpowered by the radiating personality, sublime faith, profound scholarship and high poetic accomplishment of Sankaradeva. The Guru came out triumphant in the series of debates that ensured with the Brahmana pundits. The king turned a liflong bosom friend of Sankaradeva and under his patronage Sankaradeva’s cult grew vigorously.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div style="line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In the last few years of his life, Sankaradeva kept shuttling between Patbousi and Koc-Behar. His eventful long life came to an end in Koc-Behar in 1569. Then Madhavdeva, Sankaradeva’s nominee, shouldered the headship of the religious order.</span><span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt; font-weight: bold;"><o:p></o:p></span></div></div><div style="color: #333333;"><br />

Leave all aside and practice devotion through Sravana and Kirttana<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;"></span><br />

Devotion in the Lotus Feet of the Almighty is required.</span></div><div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To be honest, in todays world nobody could be a Vaishnav. All we sinful could do is to try to be a Vaishnav by taking refugee at Lord Narayana's feet by body, mind and word, and practicing devotion through sravana and kirttana of Hari-naam.</span></div><div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today, people attach more importance to rituals etc. However, always keep this in mind that one could not be a Vaishnav by birth. One could be a Vaishnav only and only through devotion. Little devotion is not enough; Infinite devotion is needed. Every thing like wearing kanthi, being a vegetarian, etc. etc. are absurd, without devotion even taking diksha is useless.</span></div><div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />

<div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hari naam is the most powerful thing. No other virtue is greater than naam's worth. In Kali Hari naam is the only way to attain Liberation from this world.</span></div><div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hari naam is the greatest friend of man. Naam burns up all the sins of a human. It creates great virtue in abundance and makes one detached from earthly matters. Through it one could attain loving devotion at Krishna's feet. It helps one to attain supreme Vaishnavait wisdom by burning all the illusions. With supremely conscious and blissful Hari's image, naam will unite the devotee in the final stage.</span></div><div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hari naam is the master of all. One who commits offences against naam gets all his virtues destroyed; he is sure to have an abysmal fall and even Hari fails to protect him. One who knowingly does not eschew offence against naam, the wicked is bound to be afflicted and rotten in sin. And to overcome offences against naam only and only naam itself helps. Sanata Kumara says:</span></div><div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"A sinful man accused of naam-offences,</span></div><div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">May be drawn to singing of Hari-naam always,</span></div><div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Than is he absolved of naam-offences."_61(Kirttana Ghosa)</span></div><div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A person who sings Hari naam always gets salvation, being free from offences, and there is no bar to this. Thus, practice naam with full rejoicings. Only naam helps to attain great success. In Kali if Hari's naam is not ever recalled, one for negligence commits suicide. Human life is not easy to get. So, don't waste it. We may face death any time. Lets take refuge in Hari's naam. In Kali naam along has the might. </span></div></div>Pinkeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06450795626382154159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3646245835541633334.post-76396469329388399152011-07-27T05:48:00.001-07:002011-07-30T07:04:35.810-07:00What is Naam?<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 16px;">Naam means name.
